Taig lathe accessories and modifications:

One great thing about the Taig lathe is how easily it can be modified and adapted to suit your own tastes. I have built a number of accessories and made some modifications and (in my opinion) some improvements.

One of the first items I made soon after getting my lathe was a boring bar holder so I could use readily available 3/8" carbide tipped boring bars. This is a fairly straight-forward project. It is basically an aluminum block similar to the Taig stock tool posts but with a hole drilled through it parallel to the lathe bed. A small slit is cut into this hole from the side and hex bolts are used to draw the slit back together securing the boring bar.

I made a similar block to hold a rotary flexible shaft engraving tool.

While we're on the topic of tooling blocks, the stock Taig tool posts are very inexpensive. I have purchased one for each of the different turning tool bits I have. I can set up a tool bit once on center in its own post. When a particular bit is required it is a simple matter to swap out the whole tool post.

The Taig tailstock comes with a very short and decidedly uncomfortable handle. I made a longer aluminum replacement handle which gives more leverage and is easier to grip. It can be removed by pulling out a small pin.

I have also replaced the standard locking screws on the carriage and tailstock with ratcheting handles.
